Description: “Slice and sequence your loops with a matrix of markov-chain connections. Introduce order with the probability-based coin-flipping pattern sequencer. Bend time with warp functions for glitches and modulations. Tweak and trigger in real time performance. Get anything between rigid control and random chaos.”
According to the description SECTOR can “Slice and sequence your loops with a matrix of markov-chain connections. Introduce order with the probability-based coin-flipping pattern sequencer. Bend time with warp functions for glitches and modulations. Tweak and trigger in real time performance.” Markov Chain being a transition from one state to another within a set of values in a mathematical system. The “introduce order with the probability-based coin-flipping pattern sequencer” is also an interesting idea as well, though order and coin flipping seems a bit of a contradiction. But enough of the description; what is SECTOR and is another brilliant app that we have come to expect from the developer?
SECTOR is basically a sample slice sequencer wrapped up in a neat interface and defined by the amount of probability you assign each sector. The sequencer itself has 4 patterns and a maximum of 64 steps and 4 triggers. There is also a minimum of 2 sectors and maximum of 32 sectors available. The first screen is the MAP page where you can adjust various parameters and “map out” how you want your sequence to play. There are six buttons that define what could happen with the sequence. RND will randomize the pattern, CLR will clear the pattern, SH< and SH> for shift back and forward and FLP to flip the parameters.
The second screen is the SEQ page. This is where you define how many steps you want in the sequence, to a minimum of 1 step to a maximum of 64 steps. Using the 6 buttons on the left side to randomize the steps, reverse, shift forward or back or clear.
The third page is the WRP (WARP) screen. Down the left side we now have access to 24 various time warping function effects. These can be applied to one of the 4 areas within the sequence field and leveled controlled. Pressing the arrow keys under the warp effect you can shift it forward or backwards.
The MENU screen allows access to load or save a project, load a sample and import from Audioshare. Audioshare is an external app and needs to be purchased first. The speed of the sequence can be changed here and how many sectors you want to play with up to a maximum of 32.
Other features include high-quality loops by Richard Devine, Sonic Mayhem, Arovane, Alex Matheu and Sunsine Audio. The ability to import custom loops from other apps, AudioShare, AudioPaste or using iTunes FileSharing. Stream audio to other apps in Audiobus or Inter-App Audio and Audiobus2 state saving.
SECTOR is one of those apps you either “get it” or you won’t. At first it seems a bit daunting and confusing. If you’re not into mangling loops this isn’t for you. If you like experimenting with a sample and see how far you can take it, SECTOR will achieve plenty of results for you. Don’t get stuck using the build-in loops, drag in your own. The warping effects are great for experimenting with as is the ability to import your own sounds, a must for an app like this these days. The developer has all bases covered with inter app compatibility: Audioshare, Audiobus, etc, and has been responsible for some of the best effects apps out there to date (AUFX: Space and AUFX:Dub). As a viable music making app, SECTOR has a lot going for it. The price is right at $9.49 and is money will spent. Get it now: SECTOR – Kymatica (Jonatan Liljedahl)
