Description: Crystal Synth XT is a fully featured semi-modular synthesizer, ideally suited to creating lush evolving soundscapes.
Crystal Synth XT is the iOS version of Green Oak Software’s VST of the same name, without Synth XT on the end. Crystal Synth XT is the Pro version; the $0.99 version is a stripped backed version that nevertheless is still a capable app. It features subtractive synthesis and FM synthesis. The 2 octave keypad is the equivalent, though layed out differently, to the more traditional piano keyboard look; it’s a more organic way at playing notes. One thing to mention is the iPhone version doesn’t have the editing capabilities of the iPad version, though personally I like the user interface of both versions. The iPhone version has a neat “picker” screen to create sounds by randomly matching up various elements together.
The actual engine of the app is semi-modular, having control over 90 parameters, including multi-stage envelopes with graphical editors, effects like chorus/flanging/comb filtering/echoes, etc. Crystal Synth XT has “wave sequencing, granular synthesis, program morphing, MIDI learn, and imports soundfonts.” Phew! What doesn’t it have?
Crystal Synth XT is compatible with MIDI interfaces like the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer to connect up external keyboards, also CoreMIDI compatible. Audiobus and Background audio is also supported, plus Patch sharing and Audio copy and the ability to share sounds with the VST version.
There is a wide selection of quality preset sounds to get you started, to modify or share via Dropbox, etc. The Audition action is great to try a sound on the fly without going back to the Play screen. On the iPhone version the picker screen gives you endless amazing results just by mixing and matching the the Filter, Effect, Osc, and Amp together and quickly auditioning the results before going back to the Play screen. The iPad version takes this to the next level with minute adjustments of the many parameters and effects on offer. Truly a great app. Cheap at $5.49 as well.
