Review
Cube Synth is a morphing synth that is capable of generating amazing textures, evolving pads, noise, drones, arpeggios, whatever; it has everything you could hope. Or does it?

There are an amazing amount of presets. They are grouped in the usual names you’d find on most addictive synths: Leads, Bass, Keys, Pads, Arpeggios, Vocal, etc. This is where I start when I try out a new music app. The presets are great on the whole. Most people will find something useful here. The Pads and Arpeggios groups hold the best presets. But presets are not the sum of the rest of a great synth, so you need to get out of the preset mentality and dig in and find your own sounds.

What stands out on the 2D page is the Egg shaped section in the middle of the screen. This is where you morph between sounds. You have the option of manually morphing with a finger or using the Envelope Morph to plot out how the sound is generated. It is possible to create complex morphing sounds by drawing it on the screen. There are 4 morphable sources and thousands of possible parameters to create complex evolving sounds. You can really go deep with the synthesis and lose yourself in the possibilities on offer.

The Arpeggio section is one of the great features of the app. Completely user defined, sequence with up to 32 steps and trigger single notes and chords. The
randomizer generates Arpeggios for each parameter such as octave, note and accent.

The FX section includes several effects such as Chorus, Phaser, Overdrive, Ensemble, Echo/Delay, Reverb. A lot of pps are let down by a lack of effects, this one doesn’t.

Cube Synth is Audiobus compatible, CoreMIDI / Virtual MIDI, Audio recorder with Metronome, Upload to SoundCloud and File Export, Audio pasteboard.

Is it any good? Yes! The level of user interaction is amazing. Whether you want to just play the presets or delve into deeper synthesis, it’s complex, it’s simple, it’s whatever you want it to be. The stand out feature is the randomizer. Use it to generate patches with a roll of the dice. Every roll gives you amazing results. As a patch creator it works perfectly. The time I’ve spend on this app I’m always using the random function because the results are always great and unique. For $9.99 it is up there with similar apps in price and features and is money well spent.
