Description: Funk Box is a drum machine app inspired by classic drum machines such as the Roland TR808 and Roland TR909.

Funkbox is a drum machine app that emulates all the classic drum machines. These include the Roland TR909, 808, 606, CR78, TR77, Linn Drum, Emu Drumulator, Korg KR55, Yamaha RX11, etc. There are 29 preset drum machine kits to choose from. The only problem with the kits are they don’t contain every sound from the drum machine they are emulating, which is a big shame. This is down to the number of pads available on the main screen and in the actual pattern editor, which is 8.

The great thing about the app is the layout, although the limit to the pads is a let down. The buttons and pads are large and fits neatly within the overall design. In the middle of the main screen is a neat part mixer to adjust volume for each pad, including a master volume. You have the choice of tempo locking a pattern, tap adjusting and swing. There are preset styles like Bossano, Samba, Bolero, Cha Cha, waltz, Western, etc. These are inspired by the old style 70s drum machines. If you want rock styles they are there also and there is also disco, jazz, etc and these styles are organized into 3 banks. Plenty to get you going. With the inclusion of dance drum machines like the TR808 and TR909 I would have expected more current styles to show up. These’s a great section to export your patterns to .WAV and MIDI pattern export as well, which is a great feature. You can also store your patterns in several preset or classic user areas, or share your patterns quick and easy.

Conclussion: It’s a great app no doubt about it. Its retro look and feel will appeal to anyone who has used old Roland drum machines before and a great place to start for someone to hear what the old classics sounded like. I like the ease of exporting and sharing patterns. What I don’t like is the limit to 8 pad.
