Review
Another year and another app that raises the bar for what has come before. KORG Gadget is a whole collection of synthesizers and drum machines. To even begin to understand what KORG has done is to look at the amount that is on offer. There are 15 synthesizers and drum machines. 15! The “Gadgets” are named after cities of the world. For example: London is a “Hypersonic PCM Drum Module”, Marseille is a “Polyphonic PCM Synthesizer”, and Chicago is a “Tube Bass Machine”. Impressed already? The list goes on. What is even more ground breaking for an app is the way the “Gadgets” are racked together to create tracks and scenes. And what’s more each “Gadget” is like a mini app all of its own. Each synthesizer or drum machine has its own bank of programs, including user banks to store your own sounds.

The scene section near the top runs horizontal across the screen and each scene follows the one above it. Each scene is made of tracks. To create a track you press the add button. In the video I created I have one scene made up of 3 tracks. The tracks are the instruments directly below in the mixer section. If you don’t have a synthesizer or drum machine yet just press the add button and choose from the list on offer. Now click on the instrument picture which takes you to the individual synth or drum machine. To create the track input notes onto the grid. Press the play button at the bottom to hear how it sounds. You can use the Back button and create more tracks. Each track can be panned, muted or on solo. It’s as simple as that.

Other features available are: export audio, share songs to the GadgetCloud and connect with other users. Connect an external keyboard via the camera connection kit. Audiocopy and WISP is supported. For effects there is 2 on offer on the Master output: A Limiter and Reverb.

But is it any good? KORG Gadget is more or less a mini DAW for the iPad. While it’s not as sophisticated as a PC or Apple based system, it still is a great package for musicians who want to create whole tracks or even as snippets or phrases to export into your own DAW for further use. The app had me at 15 synths and drum machines. To record whole tracks is icing on the cake. One word of warning: the more instruments you add the harder your iPad has to work. If you’re using a iPad 2 be warned, it will stutter and slow down when you add 3 or more instruments. I can see KORG adding more instruments over time. For the introductory price of $28.99 buy it now before the price shoots up in line with their other apps. In a word: brilliant. The best app out there? Probably.
